Garynahine is situated on the west coast of Lewis on the shores of East Loch Roag.

The lodge is surrounded by its own policies and the estate and forms the backbone of a holiday adventure for fishermen and families wanting genuine wild sport in a wild and wonderful place. Nothing is reared or hatched at Garynahine. However extensive assistance is given by way of vermin control and habitat improvement and the resultant improvements are noticeable.

Accommodation

The lodge is comfortable , warm and friendly. With ten bedrooms, six bathrooms and all the other rooms you would expect. It forms a great base for a mixed age party where the young can play billiards and watch TV downstairs while the older can play bridge and read in the upstairs drawing room. The kitchen is outstanding with Aga, gas, electric hob and ovens. Tenants have a larder and deep freeze for their exclusive use. It is normally possible to hire a cook on the island.

Fishing

The estate contains virtually the whole of the Lewis Blackwater River system from the headwaters to the sea. Salmon enter the river from the Spring and disperse slowly to the many lochs where they can be caught from the bank or boats. In low water the fish are inclined to stay in the many deep pools of the river and give excellent fishing there. Salmon fishing ends on the 15th October. The five year average now exceeds 100 salmon and is improving. (The river is now viewable on www.fishhebrides.co.uk which is regularly updated with daily catches.)

Shooting

Walked up grouse and snipe shooting starts at the beginning of September and continues to the end of November. Pointers are used for this attractive and friendly sport.

Stalking can be arranged on neighbouring estates if adequate notice is given. (A small group of red deer has taken up residence in the South wood and a chance of a Macnab is available to those who have previously caught a salmon and shot a brace of grouse).

Exceptional driven woodcock shooting is available on a very limited basis for parties of ten guns between November and January each year. Parties usually arrive on a Friday, shoot Saturday and Monday and depart on Tuesday. This is wonderful sport with a record bag of 94 woodcock shot one day in 2005.

An open sea going boat is available by special arrangement to visit the beautiful uninhabited offshore islands in Loch Roag and fish in the sea on those windless and sunny days when fishing for salmon in fresh water is counter productive. There is no additional charge for the use of the boat, although we ask that tenants pay for the fuel.

The silver sand and almost deserted beaches on the west coast of Lewis confound the imagination of newcomers to the island. Stornoway has an excellent 9 hole golf course and many other amenities are nearby.
