The river Carron is one of a number of famous rivers that run into the Kyle of Sutherland. The Carron, like the neighbouring Oykel, Cassely and Shin is to a degree a spate river. If the water is up, tremendous sport can be had and in lower conditions the stealthy fisherman can still be successful.

The Carron is one of the north of Scotand’s best loved rivers.  The setting is beautiful and unspoilt, the pools are hugely varied and provide the fly fisher with some of the finest fly waters available.

The Gledfield fishings extend from below the Carron Bridge for approximately a mile up the south bank to a point above the Macgregor pool. This is traditionally a renowned beat for the early springer and in latter years has also had a healthy grilse return. It shares with the Cornhill beat, such inviting pools as The Raven, The Little Falls and The Gledfield. The beat provides salmon fishing for 2 rods on some classic fly water and there are 14 named pools. There is good access to the river, and fishing is eased by the platforms and walkways, which have been constructed on some of the pools.

The season on the River Carron is from 11th January through to the end of September. It is well known for its Spring fishing and fish will be present from the opening day. Fishing effort, however, does not intensify until March. Given water good sport can be enjoyed through to the end of the season
