The River Lochy runs for 8 miles from Loch Lochy to the sea at Fort William and offers some of the most idyllic and productive fly fishing for salmon and sea trout on the West Coast of Scotland.
Against a stunning backdrop of Ben Nevis and the Great Glen, the river tumbles and glides through a fantastic array of deep holding pools and choppy runs. With over forty major pools, there are 4 beats fished in daily rotation with excellent fishing huts and boats, and the gently sloping gravel banks make it a delight to wade to cover the deeper lies. There is also very good access by car to each of the beats. Experienced ghillies can also be booked by the week.
The last few years have seen an impressive upturn in rod catches due to a cohesive management policy of river improvements and selective restocking. Springers of up to 20lbs or more run the river in May and June (best fish in 2003: 30lbs, 28lbs, 25lbs), (best in 2004: 34lbs), (best in 2005: 32lbs), (best in 2006: 42lbs), followed by a large run of grilse and summer salmon in July and August. September sees the pools well stocked, supplemented by a run of heavy autumn salmon. The run of fish in 2007 was the best for 25 years
There are three privately owned houses available to rent, all overlooking the river. Two have three double bedrooms and two bathrooms, the other is larger, with six twin rooms and three bathrooms. They are very comfortable, well furnished and fully equipped for self- catering fishing holidays. For larger parties, we recommend Fassfern House.
