Orton - Estate Info

The River Spey rises in the Monadhliath mountains before entering the sea at Fochabers. It is rightly world famous for its salmon and sea trout fishing and its beat’s feature heavily in fishing literature both past and present. The bright waters are relatively shallow, swiftly flowing and tailor made for the fly-fisher. Orton is located in the heart of the Lower River, approximately 10 miles from the sea, and  the beat marches with Upper Brae (below) and Delfur (above). It is an idyllic, private and tranquil location. The Spey at Orton is a relatively big river but at the same time it is also surprisingly intimate. Orton is one of the most productive beats on the Spey and in Scotland.

Orton is building two superb new fishing huts and the estate roads are being significantly improved.

Orton - Sport

Orton is double banked and approximately 2 miles long and is fished by a maximum of 6 rods who are looked after by 2 full time ghillies. Generally, and through the prime months of the season, parties will take all 6 rods. Occasionally, two parties of 3 rods will take the beat and in these weeks the beat is split into two with the parties rotating at lunch thereby fishing the whole beat each day.

Both upper and lower sections have wonderful pools, glides and runs, all of which can offer fantastic sport in the right conditions. One of the features of Orton, and one of the reasons as to why it is so highly sought after, is the amount of water available per rod and there are opportunities, across pools such as Coupereee, House, Cairnty, Junction and the Turn in all heights of water.

Orton fishes from the beginning of the season to the end. In February, March and April Orton fishers are hoping for very low, cold water which slows the early runners.  From May, fish start to hold in numbers and late May, June, July, August and September can see some significant weekly scores posted. Due to the short distance from the sea fresh fish make up the bulk of the catch, although in September, as water temperatures drop away, the significant number of residents wake from their slumbers.
