The River Kirkaig - Estate Info

The Kirkaig is split into three, 2 rod beats, and fishers cast with a backdrop of the mountains of Suilven Canisp and Ben More Assynt. It is a magnificent and unique place to fish. Salmon are unable to pass the impressive Falls of Kirkaig and fishing effort is therefore from the Kirkiag Falls pool to the sea, approximately three miles of wonderfully rugged and swiftly flowing river.

The first fish run the river in April with the main run of fish usually arriving in late June and July with stragglers joining the river residents providing excellent sport until season end.

The Kirkaig has a steep gradient with heavy currents, and it is a noted big fish river. These fish are sighted, hooked but rarely landed.

Fishing of the River Kirkaig is strictly fly only, catch and release and restricted to the right Bank throughout its length. Please note that the Kirkaig is a spate river and does require rain to fish at its best.

The River Kirkaig - Sport

All beats fish two rods and are let by the day.

UPPER BEAT

It is a walk of approximately two miles from where one leaves the car at Kirkaig Bridge to the Falls Pool.  Access to and from the pools is very steep, over uneven terrain, and a day in the Upper Kirkaig is physically demanding. It should not be attempted by anyone who is not physically fit or experienced and tenants must fish in pairs. Anglers fish the Upper Kirkaig entirely at their own risk and great care should be taken at all times. There are few, if any, wilder casts in Scotland.

MIDDLE BEAT

The top pool is a walk of approximately one mile from the car park. The gradient and access across much of the beat are significantly more forgiving than the Upper Beat. There are a total of 10 pools including the Turn, Little Kirkaig and Hazel pools.

 LOWER BEAT

Very accessible as many pools are right beside the road.  A good beat in most conditions with a total of 7 pools including the Heather, Elder and Bridge pools. Please be aware that in periods of hot weather tourists will picnic beside the river.
